Rule Changes

Apologies if this is in the wrong section but wasn't sure where to put it.

I'd be interested to know what rules people would bring in, amend or get rid of if given the chance, personally I'm thinking more about the things that gripe me during a game but could easily be fixed.

1. Throw ins and Free kicks not taken from the right place, easy to fix just need the officials to do their job

2. Players appealling for a foul, corner, throw in or goal kick when clearly they are just trying it on, it's basically trying to con the referee so treat it the same as diving.

3. Goalkeepers falling to the floor every time they catch the ball, when did this creep in. No need for it .

4. Players celebrating in front of opposing fans, again absolutely no need for it. You get booked for taking your shirt off so why not the same for this, I think it's actually in the rules as provacative celebrating but no ref punishes it.

5. Shielding the ball out, if done correctly and legally I have no issue but you get players who change direction to block an opponent which is obstruction anywhere else on the pitch.

That's enough for now but interested to hear what people think of these and what their own changes would be.

1. Book the first player who wastes time - even if it’s the goalkeeper
2. Allow players to celebrate a goal (includes removing shirt) but not in front of opposition fans

I agree with your point 3 too, it’s an obvious way of wasting time - see my first point.

I'd like to see something done about feigning injury.

If the game is forced to stop then the player in question should miss x minutes while he is properly assessed.

I like the sin bin idea. Could be for overacting, diving, time wasting and feigning injury.

Also for surrounding officials and or abusing them? All it would need is 3 players from one team to be sin binned at the same time - just once - and I betcha it would stop!!

I would really like to see referees explaining or justifying their contentious decisions after matches. All we get now is a sort of code of silence where the LRA close ranks. 'Ref watch' is an excellent medium for monitoring ref performance, but it is normally only concerned with the elite group and the prem money games. But I think there is as much chance of that happening as there is of B*e*it......

perhaps a permanent (season long ?) thread ...or even a ref watch section on YF for the officials who take charge of OUFC games?

This. Also a player shown to feign injury automatically gets a caution (whether in the game or after the game).

Players getting booked for celebrating with fans is a big gripe for me. I wish they'd change that rule.

Players should leave the pitch at the closest point when they're being substituted.

I like the idea of a sin bin for time wasting, as long as refs enforces it consistently and properly.

IMO handball should be when a player purposely moves their hand towards the ball, or if it is in a completely unnatural position, e.g. well above their head when attempting to block a shot.

Linesmen should flag as soon as an offside player makes an attempt to play the ball. Why do they leave it until they actually get to it before flagging these days?

Some interesting comments during the women’s WC game between France and Korea the other day - along the lines of how you don’t see diving, feigning injuries or surrounding the ref in the women’s game. If only.

I believe walking off at nearest point when being substituted is an agreed change for this season? As well as the other below rule changes? Or is this just for premier league?

No the rule changes are for all levels. Obviously not VAR though thankfully.

I believe you're correct, from this season substitutes can leave the field of play at the nearest point unless otherwise directed by the ref

They have introduced sin bins in some grass root leagues. You get sin binned for 10 minutes for dissent. I still don’t think it’s improved the respect refs get or the lack of.

Yes sin bins for dissent will come in this season for step 7 and below. The idea is to penalise the whole team by being a man shirt and therefore ensuring team mates self police to ensure they keep their mouthy players in check

Interesting change for goal kicks. You can pass to team mate in area now. Would have been useful to have had that rule in place for the Bradford shambles.

The keepers getting sin binned and the rules for them coming back on will get interesting!

If a team feels that it has been wronged by an opposition player diving or feigning injury, which results in a goal, a penalty or a red or yellow card being shown, then the club should be able to cite that player after the game for deception, requiring the FA disciplinary panel to review the incident. If the case is proven, a six game ban should be mandatory.

If the referee stops the game for an injury, the player so injured must be attended by the trainer and leave the field for assessment prior to the restart.

Harsh .... but may stop some of that 'gamesmanship' employed by some

The leaving the pitch at the nearest point is nonsense, what you'll see now is instead of wandering the farthest point away they'll stand in the centre circle.
will be interesting as an opponent has to walk around the pitch passing opposing fans, just hope the silly sods didn't celebrate a goal in front of them:)

much of the initial post is subjective stuff a player could genuinely believe (and can be right) that the ball last struck an opponent

if you're worrying now about a little time wasting just wait until VAR has you waiting several minutes for a decision.

as demonstrated in the Womens World cup opener... close on 5 mins wait to decide French 'goal' was offside (by the tip of a toenail!!!)
