On several occasions I have watched various sporting events on a range of "illicit web based services". Seem`s I`m not alone.. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/boxing/48539853

Is this the end of "pay to view" ? Or are they going to "shut down" the web?

Discuss.

And yes... I know what was the first pay to view football match in the UK.... United vs Sunderland, a long time ago! ;)

more fishing the stream please ;)

though those tv companies who have in effect monopolised world sport will fight it all the way

the way I see it the cricket world cup being held in England & Wales should be on terrestrial TV

there is the "crown jewels" Olympic Games & Paralympics, The Derby,Football's World Cup, Wimbledon tennis finals, FA Cup final, Football's European Championship, Scottish FA Cup final (in Scotland), Rugby league's Challenge Cup final, The Grand National and Rugby union's World Cup final - all events that have been reserved for free-to-air TV by legislation (list is from Ofcom)

there is also a "Voluntry code" that Cricket, football, golf, tennis and rugby union and league have all signed upto (the governing bodies) that means free-to-air broadcasters have access to highlight packages, at the very least.

i have always been oppossed to Pay to view for sporting events and the like...people pay extra to have sports channels and that's where they should be broadcast not expect people to pay £20 for 1 event which to me is frankly taking the pis*...of course if people didn't fall for all the hyped up events and part with their hard earned then it could not exist in it's form. Boxing is a prime example as you get to see the early career of a boxer but the moment they fight for a title that's £20 please sir.
it was bad enough that people could not pay just for sports channels let alone pay that and more for ppv.
If sky and the like looked after their customers and stop taking the pis* with base channels many never viewed + extra for sports movies etc and yearly price increses they might have found people did not seek alternatives.

I'd happily pay a fiver to watch the boxing main event - no way do I want to waste an evening watching boxing I don't care about for more money. So I just don't bother or listen on the radio instead. It feels like boxing just doesn't understand the real world and how it has changed.

If you’re a fanatic of your football club and you decide, actually what you’re going to do is you’re going to spend your money on a few pints of lager and watch an illegal stream of the match rather than contributing that money to trying to help your club to be the best it probably can, you’re not a fan, you’re a parasite.
When you average them out, it can be about £12 per ticket. I don’t buy that there are people who are poor enough to not be able to afford that but are rich enough to be able to afford to go to pubs and drink in there.

That sounds a bit like a quote from the late lamented (would be) leader from his new northern fastness?

Given that making live cricket subscription-only has destroyed the game in this country, I judge the application of Methane's Law above inappropriate.

From what I've read, Sky etc go after the people providing the stream. For instance pubs showing matches without the subscription, and people showing a live facebook stream.

I remember one away game a few years back (Stockport?) where the pub had a sign on the door saying "no sky employees allowed in this pub except by invitation", and a strip of gaffer tape over the bottom right corner of the tv where the pint logo should be.

There in lay the problem, rather than persue the pub landlord etc why not think that maybe just maybe they have taken the pis* for too long and actual speak to their customers and allow their past and potential new customers to purchase what they want at a fair price and not have to contribute towards channel running costs that they never watch. Football sold it's soul to the 2 highest bidders with no thought for the fans and there's even a 3rd on the way.
Do the broadcasters seriously think that if there were no streams, no pirates that everyone would suddenly join/rejoin them because if they do they may just need to alter their business plan.
