I didn't rate O'Bika and knew he wouldn't be offered a new deal but the man may have a family and a mortgage it's his living not with uas but definitely with some one. My daughter and her friend went in to Tesco express before picking the kids up and he was in there and he was very polite and respectful, so let this man be let him move and that be the end of it.

Absolutely. He is a real gentleman and could teach a few people on here how to behave respectfully.

Honest enough lad, now out of work having suffered an injury impacting his livelihood. Bit of respect, eh?

He probably also saw a free transfer coming six months ago and (should have) has income protection coming out of his ears.

But his injury has been fixed, and he’ll work / earn again (even if not at the same level, or even in professional football). But whether he would have earned another contract depends on other factors too, including his competence. Hon mention R Hall Esq.

Obika is not unique by a long chalk, and the REAL tragedy is those in a single / low-income family with a significant injury that prevents them doing ANY work again. Many of those in my (considerable) experience are dropped ASAP, and not paid well to rehab over six months.

Bit of respect, sure; but also, a bit of perspective!

I don’t think anyone was suggesting others weren’t more worthy of sympathy. Just that there’s no need to be abusive to someone who has not had their contract renewed and faces an uncertain future.

Absolutely, hence my closing statement "a bit of respect, sure".

However, we shouldn’t lose sight of the fact; Jon Obika is not being forced into retirement prematurely due to injury. He’s had an injury treated and optimised, he’s now fit to play - he’s now just not good enough to play for this football club (much, as some would argue, as wasn’t before).

We all wish it had worked out for him here, but I don’t see that he deserves more or less sympathy than e.g. Fiacre Kellaher, whose future is also unclear.

Think you are missing the point...the comments are not about more or less and i havent seen anyone on here mocking Fiacres departure or any of the others and if i had i would have replied in the same manner..the comments are about behaving in a respectful way on a forum that is for debate not mocking and in some cases uncalled for abuse..too many find it easy to hide behind a keyboard...

Perfectly explained...basic standards and values.

Plenty open to an optimistic long shot I guess. Gills / Ricky Holmes a pretty stark triumph of hope over reality.

Just watch, Obika will probably now bang in 15-20 goals for a Macclesfield-type club next season, and the same forum members will ask why we didn't persevere with him ?

I wish all the departing players the best of success in all future ventures.
