I can't see any existing threads about this, but it's getting to that time of year. Robinson confirmed early which players were to be kept and which released last season. Tiger also confirmed on the forum that work had started on next seasons incomings and outgoings.

So I've been thinking lately on what our squad will start to look like next season. That obviously starts with the potential departures, to see where we'll need to strengthen next season. We'll be losing maybe a quarter of our first team squad in the form of returning loans, and several contracts are also up this summer. So I've looked at the various categories where we could see outgoings.

This could change dramatically based on what league we're in next season, but this is based on my optimism that we'll finish somewhere between 14th and 17th at the end of this campaign. Please feel free to correct me on any details I have incorrect regarding contracts or values (or just my opinions, that I'm nuts for thinking X would ever go, or that Y deserves a new contract)

Loans ending:
Browne
- Surely a Championship loan out next year.
Carruthers - Doubt we'll see him come back next year.
Garbutt - Might be the summer Everton finally let him go, doubt we'll be in the market to pick him up though.
Graham - Hoping all parties enjoy this loan enough that we'll get him next year - though I'm not optimistic.
Kashi - Potential for Robinson to go for a bod in the summer, he does like him in this league.
Sinclair - If he does moderately well for us this season, we might go for a season loan next year.

Contracts expiring:
Nelson
- Seems destined to go to a Championship club this summer once his contract expires.
Obika - Contract up this summer, has had an unfortunate injury record, but has also not performed when fit.
Hall - This is a difficult one. We would absolutely want to keep a fully fit Hall, as he's one of the most technically gifted players in L1. But he's had such an extensive history of injuries, and been out for most of the last 18 months. May be kept on a contract with performance clauses?
Shearer - Seems to be at the end of his career, unless he wants to drop down into non-league. Shearer seems to be a good part of the squad for morale (not an attribute worth an extra wage on the bill, I know), could be trained up and kept on as part of the GK coaching staff? I remember some interest for Wayne Brown earlier this year, he might not be around forever.
Mousinho - I think this contract is up in the summer, but he's been one of our most important players in the holding midfield role. EDIT: One-year extension cause was triggered in December.
Kelleher - I think his contract is expiring this summer? I hope we have an option available. Talked about as a really good defender for being in a struggling L2 team. Even if he's not a Nelson replacement, I'd like to see him in the squad next year. And if Robinson disagress, some L2 clubs will want to come in with a bid for him.
Jonte Smith - Signed on a 6-month deal, I'd think that'll likely be extended if he's been good enough to make the bench lately.

Potential Transfers
Eastwood
- Signed a contract extension last summer, but with a release clause coming into effect this year. However he's not being talked about as the same mercurial tones as last year when Celtic and Barnsley were interested, so it may not end up being triggered.
Whyte - People are worried about Whyte going in the summer, but the Belfast shenanigans might be good for us in that case. He's on a multi-year deal, has been performing quietly for us at the wrong end of the table. I just don't see Championship clubs spending millions on someone with that sort of blot on his off-field record. Probably kept for six months/one year until the controversy has been forgotten.
Brannagan - Has performed well this year, might be subject to a few bids, but unless they're in excess of a million, I expect they'll be rejected.
Dickie - Was subject of interest last summer and seemed frustrated at bids being rejected. But like with Eastwood, maybe hasn't stood out that much this year to be subject of new bids. To be kept, especially with Nelsons certain departure.
Baptiste - Long term contract. Had he not sustained the terrible injuries, I'd expect to see some teams show interest. However, unless he's back and dominating matches in early August, I assume we've got him for the forseeable.
Owen James - Might be some interest from higher clubs that saw the news this week and want to get hold of him for their U23 side? However, he's been on our bench several times and will likely want to get his break with us.

I thought Mous had another year?

I doubt anything would happen with Owen James. He has real potential but I doubt anybody would spend big money considering he is already on a pro contract, unlike the pittance they could offer under EPPP terms.

I'll be surprised at most the others you list as possible transfers if they go as well apart from Eastwood and Brannagan.

The part that made me laugh - Tiger and KR already working on incomings.

If it’s anything like this season in both windows, then we will be left frustrated yet again. The best thing for them to do, is keep themselves quiet and get on with it! I don’t want to know about targets etc. Just do it.

Browne - Too good for us + no chance of resigning him
Carruthers - Wouldn’t surprise me if we bought him, transfer listed + Sheff Utd look like they’re going up. KR also seems a fan
Garbutt - Not good enough for the wage you’d imagine he’d want
Graham - Think we’ll see him next year, clear affinity for the club. Hopefully cheap permanent
Kashi - Not seen too much of him, but like Carruthers would probably be cheap + has worked with KR before
Sinclair - Wouldn’t be a bad (loan) signing, doubt he could play at a higher level currently.

Nelson - Hopefully ends up in the Championship
Obika - Like Thomas, will score in L2. Release
Hall - Could offer a pay as you play contract like Mackie?
Shearer - Might retire, hopefully Stevens gets to play Checktrade next season. Wouldn’t mind keeping him on if Stevens goes out on loan though
Mous - Concerning he hasn’t signed an extension yet, should be a priority
Kelleher - Seems to have potential, surely worth offering an extension + looking at over pre season
Smith - Not too bothered either way, see how he gets on in the U23s

Eastwood - Release clause is worrying depending on how much it is, teams may (hopefully) look at younger alternatives
Whyte - Hopefully contract is long enough to reject any bids, hopefully continues to improve
Brannagan - Definitely think there will be interest, could be tough to keep him. Got a feeling he will go
Dickie - Would think he’d stay with Nelson leaving
Baptiste - Think the injuries have put interest off

Worth noting that Ruffels, Dickie and Henry have contracts expiring next summer, needs sorting ASAP to avoid another Nelson situation

Just searched and found we triggered the clause in Mousinho's contract back in December. Completely missed that news, but very happy with it.

I was mostly just listing potential targets for other teams. I did conclude that players such as Dickie and Whyte may be on shortlists, but ultimately unlikely to leave.

The good news is that, apart from the raft of loan players that we'll be sending back, we shouldn't see as much of a turnover as last year.

Browne - Will be in the championship next year I would imagine. Potential to burn, but on a personal note needs to kick on, next season will be a big one for him
Carruthers - Has to depend on the rest of the year, has not yet made any sort of impression.
Garbutt - Good last few matches aside don't hide what has been a disappointing season all round. He'll find his feet somewhere else.
Graham - Critically, critically important to keep him. The single biggest bit of business the club will do this close season.
Kashi - OK as back-up, probably. But nothing more. If cheap I'm not bothered one way or the other.
Sinclair - Depends again on rest of the season. Only a loan you would think, which leaves us again light up top.

Nelson - Adios Nels, was a pleasure. Championship bound.
Obika - Unlucky finish, but release of course. L2 at best.
Hall - Really tough one. Fit, he's one of the best players in the league, but you can't plan with someone this injury prone. Release, sad to say.
Shearer - Will retire I think, unsure whether he'd be kept on in a different role. Probably leave to be coach somewhere else.
Kelleher - Potential that's probably worth a one or even two-year deal, but has to be playing here.
Smith - Impossible to say.

Eastwood - Doesn't depend on us. Not the absolutely outstanding season that would have people knocking on our door. Critically important that he stays, mind.
Mous - Tough one, putting him in DM has saved our season, but is that the long-term plan?
Whyte - Great player, either him or Brannagan are next on the lot I think.
Brannagan - Ditto.
Dickie - Will stay, I don't think there'll be too much interest. Needs to kick on next season.
Baptiste - Think the team will be built around him next year. Hope he recovers to his full potential and then more.
Sykes (am adding him to the mix) - Just bought him and hasn't played much yet, but is sure to be on this list this time next year.
Ruffels - A player who you wouldn't think would attract interest, but important we get him on a longer contract. He can get a contract for life as far as I'm concerned, the Mark Kerr (Champ Manager) of our team.

Browne - Won't be with us.
Carruthers - I'm not at all convinced by Carruthers. Depends if KR keeps being allowed to sign ex-players, but personally I wouldn't bother.
Garbutt - He's not a left back and not really a winger. No thanks.
Graham - I'd love him to be here next year, but I am sure he will be at a championship club, unfortunately.
Kashi - Not sure I've seen enough to make a judgement, but do we need another ageing defensive player?
Sinclair - I like what I have seen, and if we can get a full season loan then I definitely would. Oddly - I think we have more chance of this than signing Graham.

Nelson - Won't be with us.
Obika - Simply not good enough to even consider keeping.
Hall - I suppose it depends on the medical reports, but speaking hard heartedly, he is a waste of a wage if he is unlikely to actually play!
Shearer - If we had to borrow a keeper when Eastwood was injured, then Shearer has to go.
Kelleher - Haven't seen enough to judge.
Smith - Who knows?

Eastwood - Obvious we should keep him if we can.
Mous - I'd like our DM to be someone with the ability to distribute the ball (leaving it to Dickie all the time is just daft). He certainly needs a younger 'understudy' who can learn from him and take some of the load.
Whyte - Got to keep him.
Brannagan - I'm not quite as impressed as some, but he is improving all the time. If we get a huge offer though ...
Dickie - I'd like to keep Dickie, but he was definitely out of sorts when we rejected previous offers for him. I'm a bit nervous about a completely new centre back pairing next season. Play Dickie on the right and buy a proper left side player to play on the left.
Baptiste - Looking forward to him coming back!

Plus an extended contract for Ruffs.

Unless Wolves want to loan him out to us again there is a negligible chance of us permanently signing Jordan Graham. After he returned to Wolves and earned rave reviews, they rewarded him with a new, improved contract, which will, I’m sure, mean he would eclipse the wage structure at OUFC.

He clearly likes playing here but he’s out of our (permanent signing) price range.

I thought he was out of contract this summer as they had triggered a 1 year option last summer?

Edit: googled and they did trigger an option but it was for 2 years to 2020. I can't see Wolves using him and his loans in the Championship haven't been a success so I could see us having a chance of getting him back on loan.

It's not the transfer sum he's talking about. No matter how much of an affinity he has for Oxford, we won't be able to match what he's making at Wolves. He'll be looking around for at least 10k per week, and if someone offers it to him, he's theirs.

Problem is he’s not really performed anyone other than here, whether that be at Wolves or other loans. After barely playing for a few seasons now, he might be prepared to take a pay cut to get some guaranteed minutes at a club where’s he’s settled in. Would be interesting to see what he’d choose if we offered him say 5k vs Sunderland on 10k.

Could we even pay that much? Quarter of a million a year? And how would you respond to that choice?

Surely when Thohir comes in April £10k per week will be pocket change.

In all seriousness Hall has to go, he’s more likely to catch a cold than do 90 mins regularly.

Where will Hanson play? Is he to replace Mous at some point? If so, he will have to develop his game considerably. Whether this signing eventually makes sense will have a big part to play in the future shape of the squad.

Hanson has turned out to be a very odd signing. At the time, Derby supporters were pretty dismissive of him - saying he was a 5/10 midfielder most games. I think we've seen that - so suddenly he has become a right back who is easily bettered by Sam Long. I have to say that I'm not quite sure what Hanson's strengths are supposed to be - and for a player we apparently paid a lot of money for and signed up for four years (!!!) that's not a good thing. He is 23 - let's hope there is still some development potential there, because he is far less than the finished article as it stands.

I’m far from ITK but under the impression the likes of Henry, Brannagan are on roughly 5K.
If in Graham’s situation, I’d be willing to take a pay cut in the short term to increase my chances of a bigger move in the future. Seems to be similarities with Roofe; both being loaned out into their 20s from a premier league club who they’re unlikely to break into. Struggled on loan elsewhere, formed an affinity for the club when here. Roofe joined permanently aged 22, Graham is now 23. No reason why he couldn’t excel for a full season or two before moving on.

I think he was a panic signing. KR desperately wanted a DM and missed out on his preferred choices. We ended up with Hanson on the deadline. Simple as that for me.
