The Winter Cricket thread

At least we'll all be at the football tomorrow when we inevitably lose the toss, are put in and collapse. I reckon we will be 70-4 by the time I get annoyed with the RadOx post match blether and put Radio 5 on hoping they might keep us up to date with the goings on in the Windies. :(

I was very nearly right. I switched on to find we'd lost the toss, been put in and were 69-3!

231-4 - a good partnership from Stokes and Buttler to nullify the game. The Windies are being made to work for this.

I couldn't see it on the TV in the boozer, but was that an OUFC shirt in the crowd when Stokes came back into bat? The chap didn't look that happy with life...

What’s happened to Root?

Needs to be relieved of the captaincy so he can focus on his batting. Find somebody who is a good captain (a la Mike Brierley) and might actually battle for his wicket, although may not be the best batsman. We have walking wickets anyway so they can replace one of them.

Blimey it's absolutely carnage out there, and for once it's us in the driving seat. Wood, what a spell. He will, of course, pick up an injury any moment...

Just shows the folly of playing Curran in the first2 Tests.

The selection of the squad and the starting XI for this tour has been unbelievably poor. 2 opening bats, 3 spinners and selecting the wrong player on the wrong pitches. It's like England thought they would just turn up and win.

Can’t judge a pitch until both teams have batted on it. Oh. Wait.

The difference in the bowling between the two teams up until now has been raw pace.
They had it, we didn't. Pleased for Wood, he has had a battle with fitness and has now adjusted his run up and release. Hope he can stay fit. We could do with him against the aussies

Burns gets out to the first delivery of the day, swiping at a loosener. Oh dear.

Positives - finally, a bit of pace from an England bowler!
We might not actually need him for the Ashes.....the mid-80s swing and seam merchants will likely be as effective.....but we're sure as hell going to need that pace if we want to be competitive in South Africa next winter. So let's get Mark Wood into cotton wool asap.

Oh, and we might win this game.

Negatives - still can't find an opener. Jennings and Burns both averaging 25 now (after 16 and 6 Tests respectively, which is a fair sample size to be judged on). And needless to say, that's not enough. Desperately need to uncover some new talent at the top of the order......

Denley at least seems to have looked comfortable and had some runs.
Agree that the openers are a real issue (Jennings can't surely open in the Ashes)

Opening batsmen for test matches been an issue for some time, order of the top order has been too..... to state the obvious
