Barnsley on Tuesday evening - Weather watch

The Wimbledon fog fest was funny, the LRT kept cheering whenever we saw any play...think the Wombles fans thought they were 5-0 down at halftime, then everyone walked round to the top of the Osler Road for the second half.

Remember pulling in to the car park at St James Park to be told the game was off (waterlogged?) ...went to another game in the Midlands/north but can`t remember whom!

There were 2 fog games that should have been called off that I remember at The Manor, first v Wimbledon, 83/4ish, then another against Bristol City in the early 90s. Couldn't see the halfway line in either of those games.

That Bristol game was fantastic. Celebrating fake goals etc etc. Was that of the time we had that awful video scoreboard with extra TVs in the London Road which were next to utterly useless?

The Newcastle game that got called off for a waterlogged pitch (that I can remember) got abandoned at half time when it was 0-0. It had stopped raining before kick off and the pitch actually improved through the 1st half so we were fuming (as were the Oxford players and management). It didn't help that Newcastle could then keep our ticket money.

One Newcastle game did get called off for a frozen pitch, as we were driving into Newcastle, before kick off so we went to the Lake District earlier than intended, watched Barrow play that evening, Next day went up the Duddon Valley, over Hardknott Pass (stopped at the Roman fort) and on to Wasdale (superb day). On the Monday came back, stopping on the way and watching the Oldham Vs Sheffield United game (one of the early Sky Monday Night Football games).

I think that was Biomass technology for you!!

They had some weird ‘revenge’ if you will for that by calling their game off late on New Years Day that season too. I recall getting to the ground and Nick Harris telling us that the game was called off despite the secretary at R&D telling us on the phone that the game was on.

I got a phone call about ten miles from the ground saying it had been called off, and had to sit at the side of the dual carriageway with a 3G dongle and a laptop putting a story on the site. I also sent a club text message out to SMS subscribers, but because it was New Year’s Day all the phone networks were still overloaded from the midnight rush, so most people didn’t receive it until that night or the next day because of the sheer backlog.

The past, eh.

Correct me if I am wrong. Did we play Tottenham at home in the nineties in the FA Cup? If so, the pitch was rock hard with the match being in doubt. Anyway it went ahead and about 4.00pm freezing rain descended onto an already solid surface. It was literally a skating rink. I think it was Joey who slid bottom first from the centre circle to the touchline (well, nearly!). How that match went 90 minutes I do not know.

We played spurs at home in the cup late 80s, don't remember doing so in the 90s. Think we drew, then lost the replay.

I loved the SMS service. The elation of an inbound transfer text. I’d assumed that it had ended due to the emergence of Twitter etc., but perhaps it’s just fallen into disrepair through lack of use.

I had a mate breathlessly run up to me at school between lessons in the afternoon to tell me we’d signed Dominic Foley on loan as he received those SMS updates.

The youts of today just don’t know about that sort of stuff anymore ...

Groundhog day at Watford in the 90s was fun.

Midweek cup game????
Lights went out then frozen pitch....They gave out vouchers to claim refund for ticket, but some people over indulged and pocketed a whole load.

One very clever Oxford fan, went to the ticket booth and said he couldn't make the replay so would like a refund there and then, Watford obliged, and everyone joined in, pocketing tens of £'s.

Thats the one, can remember thinking my visiting the place was jinxed !!

If I remember, going up on the LRC coaches we only appreciated there might be a problem when we saw the players' coach going back down the motorway! Pulled off at the next services to make a confirmatory phone call and went to a match at Darlo instead (I think).

Another called-off match was away at Southampton, torrential rain, found out when our coach pulled into The Dell. That was 1976, the season we got relegated for the first time. Persuaded the coach driver to take us to see the Scummers v Walsall, entered through the Town End. LOL.

I remember running about my student house when the teletext page refreshed and informed me we’d got a last minute winner at Sunderland (Moody) in 1994 to give us a chance of staying up that season, which we then failed to do.

Tell kids about teletext these days and they just slowly shake their heads and look at you with pity in their eyes.
