It all depends what your motives for owning a football club are. Holt is presumably a football fan who wants a club in the community that doesn't lose money, and he is presumably fairly happy with lower football league status. So being open and honest with fans works for him.
For many of the rest of the club owners, their motives are presumably to make some money off the back of whichever club it is, and being open about that would alienate them from the fanbase, if they are seen as on the one hand appealing to fans to back various money raising initiatives and on the other to be taking that same money back out again. I think one of the reasons Donald stopped quite so much sponsorship of OUFC was he said he may as well just give the money straight to Eales.
