Holmes

I wasn’t, I was just replying to comments!

Re comment about Charlie etc, well that’s because I thought the cult (Scotchegg, Denissmithswig, Pete (but he’s changed slightly lately), grenobleroad, Foley (occasionally) and more recently Paul B (even though I like his FV)) were missing someone to attack! Maybe it’s the OxVox link?

Just because a few posters have the same opinion and that opinion goes against what you say on here doesn't mean there is a "cult". The fact that out of all those people you have listed I have only met in person 1 of them and that was once. I have also never interacted in a 1 to 1 conversation with at least 3 of the others I'd suggest there is certainly no forum "cult".

well if we are thinking this about Holmes surely Carruthers has to go back
I guess that the medics will advise on that?
Carruthers appeared to get an injury which can get better but Holmes appears to have a back injury which isn't clearing up?
I guess a decision will be made based on what the medics think the chances are of playing a lot in the rest of the season.
Also are we allowed to return Carruthers in January?

As much as I like him, if it's not clearing up maybe it's time to split, maybe he can come back next season?

He has (I think) made 19 appearances for us this season (16 in the league). Which sounds like a lot, but to call his recent appearances 'cameos' is being generous. I agree with the general opinion - at the moment he is adding nothing. He isn't our player and at 31 years old with a chronic back problem then maybe it's time to let him go back to see if his parent club can get him fit(ter).

Interesting to look at our WDL ratio when he played as opposed to since he’s been largely missing.

We mustn’t lose sight of the fact there’s very little to be gained by sending him back. Returning Mitchell makes space for five loanees on a match day. But we won’t get credit to spend on ANOTHER loanee - after Jordan Graham we’ve one more slot to loan someone in, it doesn’t become two by returning Ricky.

We’ll save the small %age of his wage that we’re contributing but that would be small fry and shouldn’t impact a decision. We’re as well to keep him here ‘til May for whatever impact he can give us, however infrequently that may be. Same with Carruthers.

He is a character and we need to make sure we don't change too many faces for the sake of it and find we no longer gel as a group. If it aint broken dont fix it and we are looking good based on current form. If he doesn't cost us a huge wage I would keep him.

Well IMO Holmes played a large part in motivating the rest when things were looking pretty bleak, so if there is a reasonable chance he can get fit and contribute good minutes off the bench we should keep him. We are still close to the dogfight and we need fighters Holmes is a fighter.

He must stay. He is class and if you can’t see that he is, then you need a new pair of glasses.
As for the injuries, live with it. They all suffer with them purely because they are pushing themselves. Holmes has his share but we need him. Much too good to go back now.

Well yes but his ‘injuries’ are related to a long-standing back problem which means he can’t walk for two days after a game and has to wait until Wednesday to train alone. It might be the player himself who might need to make a decision too.

I think this is what Robinson was alluding to unfortunately

If his back is as bad as has been said on here then he should retire, obviously nice to have money but being able to walk, being pain free etc are priceless, risking aggravating what is obviously a serious injury in such a critical place for a couple more seasons as a footballer isn’t worth it.

I think we have unfortunately seen the last of Holmes in an Oxford shirt.

Think we will see some of the loans returning in January. Mitchell obviously, then I think Smith and Garbutt will return to their parent clubs, possibly Carruthers too depending on how long he is out for.

I think Carruthers has to go back he was ready to comeback and then another injury, I don’t think we can afford to keep him. With Holmes its a bloody nuisance absolute gifted player for this league but if he’s not going to be able to contribute to a full 90 minutes then I think it would be stupid to keep him, as has already been said for the sake of the rest of his life he should retire at least then he may be able to lead a normal life rather than being an invalid. Smith yes he has to go back and possibly Garbutt as well.
