planned to merge Oxford United and Reading FC to form Thames Valley Royals. Reading owner Frank Waller had agreed to sell
his majority stake to Mr Maxwell.

The news completely overshadowed the U’s 1-0 win at Belle Vue, Doncaster with attacking midfielder Trevor Hebberd netting
the winner.

Wow! That’s the effect a new ground can have. Football was also just less popular then , partly because of the wankers who wanted to go for a fight and to create a hostile atmosphere. Thank god things have moved on.

Referee Darren Drysdale took centre stage also sending off Charlton fullback Chris Solly.

Stevens replaced midfielder Mark Sykes.

That double save from Jack is still some of the best keeping I've ever seen at OUFC. Unbelievable. Also, blimey our two goals that day were beauts!

To be fair, the way we had been going over the previous few years, I thought we'd have a fair few more at the end of the 80s... Nearly got there again in '88 of course, bloody Luton beating us in the semis...
