Going back to the old guard again...

Amazing how we have such an abundance of white ball batsmen, but can't find anyone capable of handling Test Cricket.

Tbf, on spinner friendly wickets he is the right pick for me and it helps that he has so far been in form in South Africa, albeit in T20s.

Foakes won player of the series during our last test series in Sri Lanka. It was his debut. Will he get a recall or does his face not fit?

Foakes has been really unlucky, not getting a sniff with Buttler and Bairstow in the side and able to take the gloves, even if he is the best gloveman of the 3.

Apparently they pulled a bit of a Crewe, didn't say anything until England arrived at the ground, so we just turned around and went back to the hotel.

Underway in Sri Lanka and England going well. Bearing in mind the dusty pitch, preventing a good first innings score for the hosts will help out a lot in going for a win to start off 2021.

You can already tell what kind of match it will be. 30 odd overs into the first day and Bess and Leach have already bowled over half of the overs. I’d hate to be batting last on it.

Need to finish the job quickly, 200 on this pitch looks like it will be really handy.

Two quick wickets for Bess, SL now 126-8. Sounds like Bairstow took a whack for the fist one and has gone off, anyone watching on Sky? How did he look?

Well according to the BBC, England have bowled ok.
Sri Lanka have batted poorly and England have had quite a lot of luck.
Regardless England need to bat well and get a decent first innings lead. As they always say, it takes both teams to bat to know quite how good the pitch is.

135 all out.
Sky said it was an 'abysmal ' batting performance.

England are well on top. Lawrence has had a good start to his Test career. He looks solid and has a few shots. In the 40's at lunch.
Root didn't score a Test 100 in 2020 and is 99 no at lunch

Debut 50 from Dan Lawrence to go with Root's 100, and it's been a great confident knock.

Lawrence goes for 73 new ball spinning faster and more bounce did for him.

Buttler looking all over the place!

307/4 - lead by 172...

Rain stopped play and not looking good for more as the whole ground has covers on.
