Does anyone really think that the majority of the population will stick to 5 days without it "slipping" into New Year?
I know in normal times we are glad to see the back of folk by then , but there won`t be anyone working in Parliament so no legislation can get passed until second week of January `21.
So we are left with Tiers implemented by Central Government from Dec 2nd. They are reviewed every two weeks, so Dec 16th for a review, before Parliament recesses and we get Christmas "off".

What could possibly go wrong?

The only reason I can see for this five day splurge is that they are hoping people will stick to those five days rather than just ignoring all of the rules if they hadn't allowed it at all. I too am not convinced that will work.

Despite my family all wanting to get together, we have decided to 'have Christmas at Easter' - hopefully the more vulnerable in the family will have had a jab by then and we can meet with the knowledge that a family celebration won't end in illness or worse.

Does anyone really believe that everyone will stick to the rules. Just had to explain to Mrs Pompeyyellows that we can have our 3 kids and the mother in law round at the same time, and those that she chooses for Xmas day are the only ones for the 5 day period. Once the penny dropped she said what’s the point of Christmas.
It’s called keeping everyone safe so we can enjoy many more christmases as a family and not saying I wish so an so was still with us.

Unfortunately not. I have extended family who have just said ‘well I’m just going to have everyone around xmas day and boxing day (4/5 bubbles) and that everyone else will be doing the same anyway’ 🙄😞

Unfortunately some just do whatever suits them regardless of the stats.

I really can’t see this five day free for all being anything other than a disaster, which is shame after the hardwork put in the past few weeks.

The Government should, in my view, have been prepared to make for many people an unpopular decision and maintained restrictions over the holiday period. The key word is ‘unpopular’.

Can you even do that? It's three households/bubbles. So if you and Mrs P are one household and your mother in law is another, then you'll have to pick one of your kids to make up the third if they don't live together.

Most people in our circle have decided it ain't worth it and will be doing christmas at home for their own household with a few having close-living offspring and grandchildren (or the reverse) on xmas day or boxing day only, which seems reasonable. I expect we will do something similar, although Mrs OM will be working in the care home on three of the five days in anycase......

Perhaps the idea of "Christmas at Easter" is the one the government should be promoting.

Exactly that’s what I told her. She thought he mum didn’t count as she was already in our support bubble as she is on her own. Then she thought that we could have a different 3 families every day.

Loads are not following the rules now, even more would not follow the rules over Christmas, it’s not enforceable to check who is in peoples houses so the government probably just wanted to save some face when they are completely ignored.

Other than shutting pubs and restaurants (which seem to get the blame for all of this with no evidence) and limiting large crowds what exactly are the tiers banning? How strictly will any of the rules of this lockdown been enforced? If you want to go around peoples houses you can, just don’t have large, loud gatherings.

This forum is full of old men, it bares no reflection on wider society which has pretty much just carried on as normal for the last month.

Most people who were going for a 'self imposed lockdown Christmas' will still do I would guess. Many who were going to 'do what they liked' will still do. But maybe the rules as set will result in greater constraint amongst the rest.

Keep the bloody noise down!

Makes you think sod waiting for the vaccine to be passed as safe to use, just stick it in me so We can get some normality into our lives without working out who we can or cannot see.

Protected characteristic breach alert x 2 :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

Me & Mrs EY (MkII) are hunkering down over Christmas, her birthday is 6 days before and we are "away", back for Chrimbo then "away" for New Year.
All perfectly legitimate as far as I know.
Based on this for Tier 2 & 3 which will probably cover the areas where we will be...
  • you can continue to travel to venues or amenities which are open, but should aim to reduce the number of journeys you make where possible. ✅
  • avoid travelling to other parts of the UK, including for overnight stays other than where necessary, for work...... (Mrs EY is on call and they have Wi-fi.) ✅

I’m booked to go away for the missus 40th birthday on the 11th December, nothing glamorous but just the two of us for a meal and a few drinks if anything is open, got to wait for tomorrow’s tier system to see if we can go. Seems strange to me that people who live together can’t socialise outside of the house, good for the economy and can’t really make much difference to the Covid rate.

I think she counts as one household with yourselves as she’s part of your bubble and on her own. So you can still have 2 other households.

The way Jeremy Vine explained it this morning on tv was that she would change from being in our support bubble to her own household for the duration of the 5 days of Xmas.
