Home Match Day Thread 30/01/2021 L1 OUFC v Fleetwood Town

John Sheridan has been a disaster in management. I suppose Oldham will have him back.

Interesting to compare the two sides. The 1982/3 side was very much a work in progress. On the positive side, it included the incomparable Trevor Hebberd. Ray Train was very much in the Gorrin mould. George Lawrence had a lot in common with Mide Shodipo. I was never a great fan of Peter Foley, and would say that Taylor is a markedly better player.

Curiously, for most of these fixtures, we seem to have been playing David Grant alongside Malcolm Shotton in the centre of defence. From memory(!), Grant was no great shakes, and I would much prefer to have Sam Long deputising than Grant.

Foley was decent in my view - scored seven in that 82-83 winning sequence and often played in a struggling side for five years before Ian Greaves was appointed. He was quick in behind and with his pace could play out wide. Scored 90 goals and missed 9-10 spot kicks
for the U’s according to Peter , himself. Foley was not a good penalty taker despite being a number nine!
Train was in his 32nd year then and was at the twilight of his playing career but a good pro.
Oxford played a standard 4-4-2 under Smith - Hebberd in the centre of the park with Brock/Train and Lawrence and Smithers the wide players.

We faltered badly towards the end of the 82-83 season. The keeper and two full-backs were not good enough.

A win is a win, no matter how it is reached.
Hell, when you look at where we were to where we are now, this has been some achievement.
You have to hand it to the players, staff and manager for hauling us out of the mire. Losing to the scum was perhaps the catalyst for this stunning turn around.
We have no god given right to win. It is a fight just to draw games so to go on a winning run like this is effing marvellous. We can keep going now. Knowing that we can play poorly and still get results.
The prize is in front of us. Right there.
Well done boys!

It's ironic really, that loss against the scum was the catalyst for our stunning change in fortunes, so even when they beat us, for the first time in years, we actually win!

Cheers scum! 😂

A good win to break the hoodoo, great winning run which has nearly put us in the mix, lets not get too carried away, we have some tricky games coming up after Tuesday, Doncaster., Gas away to start with, also Pompey soon, although we know that will be 1-1. So lets see where we are at the end of February and go from their.

Swindon and Wigan meet at the County Ground for a 6pm kick-off this Tuesday night.

A Swindon defeat would see John Sheridan sacked, apparently.

Is that a forum claim? Can Power afford to sack Sheridan even if it is only a contract to the end of the season? They have the ownership court case starting next month apparently.

And the run also included a 5-1 away win ( at Orient ) !

The club is in disarray by all accounts. A large section of the fans have aleady given up. After losing at home to Plymouth last Tuesday , Sheridan got a bit nasty with the local BBC Wilts reporter in his live post match interview and did not do the Press after yesterday’s loss at Hull.

Their best player , midfielder Matt Smith, is supposed to be returning to Arsenal earlier than expected. They had another loanee , left winger Jonny Smith who did pretty well but was recalled by Bristol City and then sold to Burton Albion last week.

Sheridan always gets pissy with the local media, I think it is a given with him. The Matt Smith thing is just weird but I guess he isn't any good in SHeridan's opinion for hoofball.
