Home Match Day Thread +++ 01/01/2018 OUFC v MK Dons match day thread +++

If I was Pep, given the Riccy suspension, I would train for this formation against Blackpool:
Eastwood
Mous, Martin, Williamson
GVK, Ledson, Ruffles, Mowatt
Payne
Thomas, Obika

Press, Push high and get the ball forward quickly. 3 centre halves should be able to manage an offside trap so ATTACK!

Let's not confuse them all by trying another formation. Stick to the same tactics as against MK.
Carroll over to the left and Tiendalli on the right.
Or Tiendalli straight swap for Ricky.
Or Ruffles at LB and someone else in midfield.

I would have said that too before yesterday. But GvK did heck of a lot of tracking back in that match.

Following reports at Bradford I made a point of watching GVK off the ball yesterday.

He did some useful stuff but still felt he only came alive in the final 3rd (to good effect!).

I’m still not sure I would be relying on him to track back and prevent crosses etc....

Someone else in midfield being!?

I wouldn’t be against mousinho having a run out in CM. The thought of Williamson/Martin CB partnership though doesn’t fill me with confidence unless Blackpool play route 1...(I thought Martin was MOTM yesterday btw!)

A valid point, of course. Which is why it was option 3.
After a win (and especially playing against a similar team) keep everything as is. Mousinho in midfield in and of itself is not a bad idea, but Mousinho in front of Williamson and Martin? Personally that's a no from me...

Stick Mowatt in central midfield on the left hand side.

Is an option, but for Saturday just replace like for like...Tiendalli coming in on the left or right. Keep two up top.

Interestingly GVK said he prefers playing up top, which I guess will lead to Hemmings being on the way out. Although I feel he is a decent poacher.

Play Mowatt in his proper position, central mid alongside Ledson and move Josh back to LB

Pep could have done that after the sending off but he chose not to, so I think we'll see Tiendalli at full back against Blackpool. Will help him massively not to have Xemi on the same side of the pitch as himself.

Okay, yesterday was much improved and our best performance of the xmas break.

Positives:

Aaron Martin has been our best player for the last 3 games (amazing what an actual pair of studs can do for you). Pleased for him as pretty much everyone had written him off and he’s showing what a dependable footballer he is.

We scored 3 goals. Can’t sniff at that.

It was a better all round performance. A little bit of quality added to the spirit and fight which was shown against Bradford.

However....

I believe today’s performance merely papers over the cracks. MK were awful. They were looking for Agard in behind so often and the weight of pass was terrible. Their goalie has gifted us both GVK and Obika’s goals. They will be scrapping for their lives in a few months.

Our tactics are still round. People talk about a high press during that game. Sorry, that happened infrequently as opposed to being the tactic. We are still sitting way too deep at home. We arnt in the opposition faces.

GVK is an awful footballer, yet is somehow loved. Don’t get me wrong, I chant his name when he scores, or when he does his off the ball stuff (which was superb against Bradford and good again today) but he does not have a football brain. For their goal he told Richardinho to go towards the man nearest corner, so GVK could then be spare and do nothing. That isn’t good enough. His all round play is poor.

Richardinho. Stupid. For Pep to say there was no malice in that shows again how out of his depth he is. Does he think we are all stupid? Anyone could say it was a ‘revenge tackle’ for 3 seconds previous.

Our attacking play is not incisive enough. Obika has played okay last couple of weeks but in reality he isn’t that good. He does that rollover he loves, but he makes so many bad decisions.

Against better sides, we will be beaten playing like that. I’m pleased we got the 3 points. I am actually firmly still behind DE. The programme notes are good enough for me. If he says we’re buying in 2 or 3 and we’re going back to the young English lads who have a point to prove and we are looking at pace, then that is good enough for me. At least our chairman is seeing the same things we all are.

The manager still remains the issue at the moment for me.

Happy with those 3 points at home ..... only 15 more to clock up for the survive for another season in L1 target of 50 ;)

Up the Manor!:)

That red card gets worse every time you watch it, just glad Carroll got to Ricardinho before that big lad coming over

You could say that about any game. That's why you have an army of analysts, coaches and a manager behind the scenes to tweak tactical approaches. Wes definitely didn't play as a no.10. I'd be interested as to why you think he did. Defending set pieces needs addressing - it seems to be a mix of man and zonal marking. At this level you man mark. Players aren't smart enough for zonal and I think it's rubbish at any level TBH.
Wes was definitely playing behind Obika. Not in the same role as Payne, but Obika was definitely the lone man up top. The midfield is now a 4, without question.

We have been using a hybrid all season.

When Williamson plays he is free on the penalty spot controlling the middle of the box mopping up the headers...at least then you can just track the ball and not both a player and ball.

The response of the Oxford players was good. Carroll was so quick to get between Ricardinho and the big MK centre back - who should not have charged over to Ricardinho. The ref is there with his cards so there was no need for him to ignore his team mate on the ground and remonstrate with Ricardinho... And Carroll quickly gave way to Mousinho to deal with the centre back...

Ledson appeared to be looking out for the guy on the ground - whilst the other MK players were...

Mistakes happen. It's good to see Oxford had some calm heads.
